Building the world’s largest battery factory to accelerate a sustainable energy future. The 'Tesla Gigafactory' is a concept for a massive battery factory capable of producing the equivalent of the entire current world's production of li-ion batteries or about 105 GWh of capacity. Tesla plans to eventually operate several of these giant factories, but the first one - called 'Gigafactory 1' - is under construction in Sparks, Nevada (east of Reno). Now that Tesla opened up its Gigafactory to the media and Tesla owners last week, we got to see quite a few cool things at what is on its way to become the most advanced factory ever built, but arguably none cooler than the robots working there. There are a few different kinds of robots helping employees at the plant. Some workers say that they see them as colleagues, something Tesla already tried to implement at its Fremont Factory by giving X-men names to the robots. Let’s take a quick look at the Gigafactory robots… While Telsa plans to employ as many as 10,000 people at the factory once at full capacity, the company is also betting on automation to help achieve its goals. The company hired Eric Christensen to manage industrial engineering at the plant. Christensen has over 20 years of experience in manufacturing automation, primarily at chip maker AMD, and interestingly, CEO Elon Musk often compared the Gigafactory itself to a CPU. Christensen oversees the overall equipment layout and material flow, something robots participate in. Robots like these self-navigating Autonomous Indoor Vehicles (AIVs) by Adept: Unlike most other kinds of the robots at the plant, those AIVs don’t need to be caged or follow floor magnets or navigational beacons, they can navigate the factory freely through the use of a digital map and safely avoid people and obstacles by detecting them with their sensors. They are primarily used for moving materials between workstations. They are also customizable. For the visits last week, they were welcoming people to the factory saying “welcome to Tesla”. The automaker also uses them at its Fremont Factory. They modified one to make it look like R2-D2 from Star Wars. It was converted into a battery material in China. It’s pretty much in everything, which is good marketing for the lithium business. Essentially the lithium is in the batteries because it is the lightest most reactive metal on the periodic table. Battery demand forecast is good too --- I think the guys at Panasonic are looking at 75% per annum compound growth. They’re the biggest producer in the market so they’d be trying to hose that down. We think it’s well over 100%. There’s essentially two main lithium compounds. One is lithium carbonate, which is a first generation material. It goes into the batteries, predominately made by the Chinese and Chileans and Argentinians. Lithium hydroxide is a far better material, but there’s very few plants in the world. The Canadian and U.S. governments have been trying to fund development of that. Tesla, with their Gigafactory, and there’s no IP in the Gigafactory. It is one of the world’s largest sheds. That’s it because, you know, for lithium hydroxide it goes from Australia to China to become hydroxide. It goes to Japan to Sumitomo for Tesla cause Panasonic uses Sumitomo to make a cathode. It then goes to Panasonic to make it into the battery. Then they send it to Tesla and they put it into the battery management system. That’s really where their IP is. Then it goes into the car. They’re going to do it all under one shed and it cuts the cost of the end product by about 30%. Now it’s always good to say, okay, well, lithium carbonates are first generation. Lithium hydroxides are second generation. Tesla’s cars use lithium hydroxide. Lithium hydroxide trades at about a $2,000.00 a ton premium to lithium carbonate. All the growth in lithium hydroxide is in those green bars and it’s increasing rapidly. Now we have a look at the lithium fundamentals. The cars are great and, you know, you can see them. It’s the sizzle. The steak is really in renewable energy storage, solar and wind. This was a forecast from a professor at the University of Western Australia. As the prices of the battery storage comes down their adoption goes up. Now we were going to be at about $250.00 per kilowatt hour in 2020 as it relates to a power pack, which is a 100 kilowatt stack, $25,000.00 U.S. dollars. He’s brought forward that curve about 5 years. Being in lithium, it’s a bit like being in steel in 2002-2003. The Chinese are building all these battery plants, in that case they were building steel plants, and you knew the iron ore demand would come. You’ve got every volume car manufacturer in the world with plugins and some moving to electrics, but…to access the full presentation, click here

Tesla Motors has started mass production of lithium-ion battery cells at a factory in Nevada. Along with Japan's Panasonic Corp., the electric vehicle company has started making their own batteries at the gigafactory. The factory will produce cylindrical cells as energy storage from Tesla's growing catalog of electric cars and SUVs, including the upcoming Model 3. But for now, the factory is producing battery cells for the company's Powerwall 2 and Powerpack 2 products. Production for the Model 3 battery cells is expected to begin during the second quarter. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/topNews/~3/7R_sn3CbxEA/us-tesla-gigafactory-idUSKBN14O1OK http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com

(27 Jul 2016) It's Tesla Motors' biggest bet yet: a massive, $5 billion factory in the Nevada desert that could nearly double the world's production of lithium-ion batteries. Tesla Motors officially opened what it calls its Gigafactory on Tuesday, in Sparks, Nevada, close to Reno, a little more than two years after construction began. The massive $5 billion factory could nearly double the world's production of lithium-ion batteries. The factory is about 14 percent complete, but when it's finished, it will be about 10 million square feet, or about the size of 262 NFL football fields. That will make it one of the largest buildings in the world. The factory is key to the future of Palo Alto, California-based Tesla. The 13-year-old electric car company, which has never made a full-year profit, wants to transition from a niche maker of luxury vehicles to a full-line maker of affordable cars, pickups and even semi-trucks. It also runs Tesla Powerwall, a solar energy storage business for homes and businesses. The company says making its own lithium-ion batteries at the scale the Gigafactory will allow will reduce its battery costs by more than a third by 2018. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the factory could easily employ 10,000 people in the next three to four years. Most immediately, Tesla needs the batteries for its fourth car, the Model 3 sedan, which is scheduled to go on sale at the end of next year. At a starting price of around $35,000, the Model 3 will be Tesla's least expensive vehicle, partly because of battery cost reductions. The batteries for Tesla's current vehicles, the Model S sedan and Model X SUV, are made in Japan. To meet goals, Gigafactory construction is proceeding at a furious pace. Inside the factory, Tesla's partner, Panasonic Corp. — which has invested $1.6 billion into the factory — is installing machines in sealed, humidity-controlled rooms that will start making battery cells before the end of this year. Outside, nearly 1,000 workers are laying the groundwork for the factory's expansion, digging trenches and erecting steel supports in the hot, dusty valley. By the second quarter of 2017, 31 percent of the factory will be completed. Eventually, the roof will be covered in solar panels. The factory's name stems from "giga," a unit of measurement that represents billions. One gigawatt hour is the equivalent of generating one billion watts for one hour — one million times that of one kilowatt hour. Tesla says the factory will be producing 35 gigawatt hours of batteries by 2018. That's the equivalent to the entire world's production in 2014. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said the factory has the capacity to produce 150 gigawatt hours if it needs to. To put that in context, New York City uses around 52 gigawatt hours of energy per year. Musk also spoke in defense of Tesla's autopilot feature during a news conference. He pointed out that the feature is called autopilot because the driver is expected to be alert and ready to take over at any time, just like airplane pilots using autopilot. The 10 KW model has a 10 year warranty and cost about $3,500.00 .... You would need about 3 or 4 of these to supply enough power for a average size family. Perfect for cabins way out there, with no power lines. In time prices may come down and this could be a big part of the future ?

May 18, 2015Chris Berry, co-editor of the Disruptive Discoveries Journal, founder of House Mountain Partners, LLC and Host for InvestorIntel in an interview with Tracy Weslosky discusses the recent Tesla Motors Powerall batter announcement, the energy storage market and the impact on technology metals. Tracy Weslosky: I think you're probably the best person in the world to talk to about this big Tesla movement and the Powerall battery announcement last week. Can you talk to us about the impact on the market from this announcement? Chris Berry: Sure. You know, Tesla has been rumored to be getting into what's called the stationary battery movement for a long time as a compliment to the car business that they've really been pushing. They're coming out with two types of batteries. One is more, I guess, commercial, larger in scale. The other one is for your home. I think the home one is about a 7 kilowatt hour. Just to put that in perspective the average American home uses about 30 kilowatt hours of energy per day. That gives you an idea of how the Tesla offering could potentially help or supplement energy use in the home. You know, I am glad that Tesla's leading the charge, but there's a lot of competition and there's a lot of choices in the energy storage business, but it's clearly a growing market that's here to stay. Tracy Weslosky: How is this going to impact lithium? I know you're an expert on most of the technology metals, but lithium in particular comes to mind as we have had some big announcements with Cobre Montana and Critical Elements Corporation. Can you tell us what is going to happen to the demand for instance in lithium? Chris Berry: Right now lithium is in demand as it is used in about 90 different products. When we focus on the battery though what we talk about is lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide. Lithium demand overall is growing is growing at about 8% per year. That's a pretty conservative estimate. If you talk to some other folks in the space they'll say it's 10% or 11%. I'm comfortable with 8% right now. That obviously is because of the battery business. Whether or not its electric vehicles or storage or communications devices, like the iPhone, it's really, really pushing it. What you're starting to see is tightness in the lithium space. You've got a situation where the oligopoly, which is SQM down in Chile, FMC and Albemarle, the Chinese, all have different issues, different production issues. I think it's an open question as to whether or not they'll be able to meet this budding demand from the battery business in the coming years. That really opens the door for companies, like you mentioned, Critical Elements or some of the other ones like Western Lithium or Lithium Americas, the really de-risked plays in the space, to potentially contribute in the coming years.
